FALL 2016 Man Style

What should a man wear when he’s not in a suit? Business casual dress is the new normal for many offices and the options are often confusing. It can be tricky putting all of the pieces together when going for more style than the basic shirt and khaki pant combination.

Choose a pant with texture or pattern like these ‘Boss’ flat front houndstooth wool trousers from Nordstrom.mens-houndstoothAdd a shirt with a small plaid, stripe or check pattern. This non-iron “Madison Fit Hairline Framed Check” style is made by Brooks Brothers.brooks-brothers-shirtIf the formality of a tie is preferred, then a solid or pattern tie would work well with this shirt and pants. It’s personal preference whether a tie and pocket square are both worn together, or neither is necessary with a shirt, trousers and sweater. This Ted Baker London silk tie is available at Nordstrom and can be worn with a plaid shirt and sweater or with a sport coat.ted-baker-tieLayer a V-Neck or half zip sweater over a shirt and tie combination, and choose a contrast color for more interest like the Bloomingdale’s Men’s Store cashmere half zip sweater in “Granite Grey.” This sweater looks as great with jeans as it does with dress slacks.bloomingdales-mens-cashmere-sweater

Wear a sport coat or blazer over the sweater if you’d like extra interest, layers and a dressier look. This sport coat from Bloomingdales is the Hugo Boss “Antano Slim Fit” style. boss-sport-coat

Finish the whole look with a great pair of shoes. The “St. John’s” double monk strap style from Allen Edmond is available in three shades of leather.double-monk-strap-mens-shoe

There are so many options with these wardrobe pieces…. switching up the dress slacks for jeans, wearing a shirt, tie and pocket square, or the sweater with or without the sport coat…. the list goes on….. so dress for your professional needs, whatever your day requires and also builds your confidence.

Chambray is Everywhere

What’s “Chambray” anyway? You hear it all the time but just what does the word “Chambray” mean and what’s the difference between that and denim? According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, Chambray is- “a lightweight clothing fabric with colored warp and white filling yarns.” and denim is ”  a firm durable twilled usually cotton fabric woven with colored warp and white filling threads.” Ok, that seems confusing but the real difference is the weight of the fabric. Denim is a heavier weight while chambray is much lighter and versatile. Chambray shirts, skirts, and dresses or even shoes are made by just about every brand!

This off the shoulder top from Alice + Olivia from Neiman Marcus would be delightful on a hot summer day! Pair it with your white jeans or tuck into your favorite skirt or shorts.J. Crew has a chambray version of their J. Crew Regent Blazer and it’s available in regular sizes as well as petites. This jacket can take you from the office to a date night. It can be worn over a dress, or with pants or a skirt. You can even wear it with jeans as long as the denim wash is substantially darker or lighter than the jacket.j. crew jacketCropped ankles pants are a great option to wear with heels and flats! Trend Alert – Capes and Ponchos!

Do you remember wearing a cape or poncho back in the day? Well if this is your first time around with the trend, you’ll enjoy it because capes and ponchos are a huge hit this Fall and Winter and can be found nearly everywhere you look!

C Wonder has a black and white herringbone belted cape which was featured in September’s Oprah Magazine.

C Wonder black and white capeFor a more laid back vibe, this casual poncho from Calypso St. Barth would be great for a drive to the mountains, spending the day exploring the West End, or strolling a Fall festival.

Calypso St Barth navy ponchoAnthropologie has a cozy unbelted cape that can be dressed up or down for a sophisticated business casual look or for fun on the weekends and is appropriate for women of any age. It pairs well with a skirt as in the photo below, pants, or your favorite jeans. The cape is available in petites too!

Anthropologie neutral capeFrench Connection has an adorable wool blend plaid version!

So, how do you wear this trend? If you’re wearing a poncho or cape, make sure the rest of your outfit is more fitted with a slim, straight, cropped or skinny leg pant or a skirt that stays close to your frame so you don’t look overwhelmed by your clothes, and no long skirts or baggy pants allowed! Keep your shirt plain, simple and smooth underneath so your cape or poncho is your style statement without extra bulk. A structured fabric works best for the office, while a knit is more appropriate for casual days. Capes and ponchos feel current, in style, and super chic so try them to break out of your “same old sweater” rut!

Kick Up Your Style in 2013

Can the Atlanta Falcons do it??? You can toss a jacket over almost any outfit and you’ve just doubled your style all year long!  A jacket adds effortless chic to an ordinary outfit. Think black leather motorcycle jacket over a t-shirt and jeans, or a denim jacket over a sweater dress and boots.

Jennifer Anniston’s wearing a classic fitted navy blazer in this photo from 2010… it’s just as stylish now as it was then, and will be for years to come. So, what type of jacket do you need?

This denim jacket from Old Navy is on sale now and comes in six colors! The current fashion trend of wearing a denim jacket with denim jeans is great, but make sure the two colors are contrasting so you don’t look like you’re wearing a denim suit!

Jackets with contrast piping are popular like GAP’s version in a comfortable knit fabric. This blazer will go from the office to date night. Wear it with a solid colored top, stripe or print underneath since it’s a neutral… you can find it in petite and tall sizes too.

A fitted blazer like this from Ann Taylor will hide your figure flaws and give you a streamlined look making you appear pounds thinner, and

White House Black Market’s mini trench coat has great waist detail for a slimming look too!

Wear a jacket and feel stylish and confident for the game, a date night or the office!

Polished Peplum

PEPLUM is BACK!

The modern take on the peplum style is super flattering on most body types. This style has been around and back again, starting with the 40’s, then the 80’s and is a huge trend again for 2012. This extra flounce of fabric has been added to tops and jackets, skirts, dresses and high waisted pants…even hemlines.

Here’s Charlize Theron in a classic red Lanvin peplum dress for the MTV Movie Awards back in June,

and Emma Stone at the same event in a dramatic black peplum top. While Emma is wearing a fuller skirt, its generally best to have a fitted silhouette on the bottom by wearing slim pants or a pencil skirt.

If you’re looking for a top with that extra ruffle try this cozy cashmere sweater from Bloomingdale’s which could be casual or dressy.

Another great peplum top, this one for plus sized women made in a metallic fabric by Alfani for Macy’s.…is perfect for the holidays!

And, a fantastic skirt that’ll make you want to wear peplum is this Alice + Olivia pencil skirt from Neiman Marcus. Pair it with a fitted blouse for an office party or dinner date.

Curious to know more about Peplum? Here’s a tiny little history lesson…..http://fashionandhistory.wordpress.com/2012/01/07/the-frilly-tale-of-the-peplum/

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU!!!

Men…It’s Business Casual

WHAT TO WEAR WHEN YOU DON’T NEED A SUIT

Guys… You might be wearing a suit less than ever before, so what are you supposed to wear to look professional and put together? A shirt and khakis might be your “go to staple” but there are other options. Consider the current trend of a lightweight crew neck sweater like this from Brooks Brothers. A soft crew neck sweater can be worn without a shirt underneath for a clean, professional look.

Layer a crew neck sweater under a sport coat like this also from Brooks Brothers. Wear it with trousers for a business dinner meeting, and then switch to jeans for a casual night out with friends another time.

For an alternative color to your khaki trousers, consider these great wrinkle resistant cotton chinos also found at Brooks Brothers.

Another option on top is to wear a modern sweater vest like this available at Nordstrom. It can be worn under a blazer and may be worn with a tie.

Now remember your grooming touch-ups and you’ll look great! Hope these tips give you new ideas for business casual!

The Lady Like Look

IT’S “MAD MEN” STYLE FOR FALL

The show MAD MEN may have been 0-17 at the Emmy’s this week (ouch), but the series has been a huge hit in the fashion department! The classic, curvaceous feminine shapes for women and sharp suits for men are still a big trend for Fall. The look for women includes hourglass shaped dresses, and checks, plaids, pleats and polka dots, peter pan collars, bows and red lips. There’s even a Mad Men cocktail recipe guide…link here! But, back to fashion…..

You can see Rachel Bilson wearing the feminine color combination of a blush pink and black blouse with an 80’s flashback… peplum pants… for a CBS and Showtime Party.

A soft romantic blouse like this one from American Eagle can be worn with jeans or tucked into a fitted pencil skirt or pants and worn with kitten heels for the office.

Wear a dress like this pretty pleated red A-line by Calvin Klein from Macy’s and add a necklace in the new “peter pan collar” shape. These collar necklaces can be found in many stores, but here’s one I love from Anthropologie.

The classic bag to go with this “lady like” styled wardrobe has top handles and structure… think Jackie O! This gorgeous bag from Tory Burch would fit the bill….maybe not your budget…..but you get the idea!!!
