FALL 2016 Man Style

What should a man wear when he’s not in a suit? Business casual dress is the new normal for many offices and the options are often confusing. It can be tricky putting all of the pieces together when going for more style than the basic shirt and khaki pant combination.

Choose a pant with texture or pattern like these ‘Boss’ flat front houndstooth wool trousers from Nordstrom.mens-houndstoothAdd a shirt with a small plaid, stripe or check pattern. This non-iron “Madison Fit Hairline Framed Check” style is made by Brooks Brothers.brooks-brothers-shirtIf the formality of a tie is preferred, then a solid or pattern tie would work well with this shirt and pants. It’s personal preference whether a tie and pocket square are both worn together, or neither is necessary with a shirt, trousers and sweater. This Ted Baker London silk tie is available at Nordstrom and can be worn with a plaid shirt and sweater or with a sport coat.ted-baker-tieLayer a V-Neck or half zip sweater over a shirt and tie combination, and choose a contrast color for more interest like the Bloomingdale’s Men’s Store cashmere half zip sweater in “Granite Grey.” This sweater looks as great with jeans as it does with dress slacks.bloomingdales-mens-cashmere-sweater

Wear a sport coat or blazer over the sweater if you’d like extra interest, layers and a dressier look. This sport coat from Bloomingdales is the Hugo Boss “Antano Slim Fit” style. boss-sport-coat

Finish the whole look with a great pair of shoes. The “St. John’s” double monk strap style from Allen Edmond is available in three shades of leather.double-monk-strap-mens-shoe

There are so many options with these wardrobe pieces…. switching up the dress slacks for jeans, wearing a shirt, tie and pocket square, or the sweater with or without the sport coat…. the list goes on….. so dress for your professional needs, whatever your day requires and also builds your confidence.

Trend Alert – Capes and Ponchos!

Do you remember wearing a cape or poncho back in the day? Well if this is your first time around with the trend, you’ll enjoy it because capes and ponchos are a huge hit this Fall and Winter and can be found nearly everywhere you look!

C Wonder has a black and white herringbone belted cape which was featured in September’s Oprah Magazine.

C Wonder black and white capeFor a more laid back vibe, this casual poncho from Calypso St. Barth would be great for a drive to the mountains, spending the day exploring the West End, or strolling a Fall festival.

Calypso St Barth navy ponchoAnthropologie has a cozy unbelted cape that can be dressed up or down for a sophisticated business casual look or for fun on the weekends and is appropriate for women of any age. It pairs well with a skirt as in the photo below, pants, or your favorite jeans. The cape is available in petites too!

Anthropologie neutral capeFrench Connection has an adorable wool blend plaid version!

So, how do you wear this trend? If you’re wearing a poncho or cape, make sure the rest of your outfit is more fitted with a slim, straight, cropped or skinny leg pant or a skirt that stays close to your frame so you don’t look overwhelmed by your clothes, and no long skirts or baggy pants allowed! Keep your shirt plain, simple and smooth underneath so your cape or poncho is your style statement without extra bulk. A structured fabric works best for the office, while a knit is more appropriate for casual days. Capes and ponchos feel current, in style, and super chic so try them to break out of your “same old sweater” rut!

FOX 5 WAGA TV Style Segment

“A Season of Gatherings”

What an exciting day for me and my team of models!!! Best Impressions In Style was invited by FOX 5 TV to create a style segment with Karen Graham, anchor of GOOD DAY ATLANTA using three basic pieces men and women could wear now and through the holidays to social gatherings. FOX 5 TV had already asked Kohl’s to participate so I got to work styling three models in fabulous outfits from a local Kohl’s store. Of course I wanted to include the current trends of animal print, embellished collars, gold accents, knits, and leather!

Don’t they look amazing in their new clothes?!! They’re in perfect outfits for parties, dinner out, and for getting together with friends. Each piece can be worn so many ways to make totally different outfits…love the leather jackets!

Here’s the whole group with GOOD DAY ATLANTA’s own Karen Graham (center) and make up artist, Udunma Ogene (second from the right).

This one’s a little blurry but we were having FUN!!!

Lucy looks hot but classy in this feminine blouse under a quilted leather jacket paired with a cute pleated knit skirt!

Doesn’t Barbara look like she’s ready for a party in her animal print top with gold chain trim paired with cropped straight leg pants? She’s wearing a pretty cream colored jacket that’s a perfect fit for her little petite body.

And here’s Karen Graham and me giving big smiles for the camera! Well, as they say in show business…. “that’s a wrap!”… Now I’m off to style my next client….is it YOU?!!

FALL is FINALLY here!

What’s Happening this FALL?

Sad news in the ATL…..The Braves are OUT of the playoffs and the Falcons need a WIN! Will it be the Georgia Bulldogs and the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship?! Cheer for your favorite team while dressed in style this season.

Are you a Plaid lover? Plaid is HOT for Fall with many colors and styles to choose from like this adorable

British Tweed Mini skirt from the Boden website (it’s also available in a longer length). Pair it with a sweater, tights and boots for a casual gameday look.

Another popular trend is real or faux leather found in tops, dresses, pants or just trim details on anything and everything. Here’s the perfect faux leather dress from Anthropologie. Wear it a million ways!

How about Houndstooth… it’s in for Fall! A fun addition to your wardrobe is this Isaac Mizrahi pump with a comfy kitten heel found at Nordstrom.

Jump right in to the gray flannel trend with this little bag by Kate Spade, available through Zappos online. It’s 40% off and as always, the shipping is free!

And, of course hang on to your leopard prints ladies, because they’re SO in style too!

Spring TIPS and TRENDS

Here’s a great question….. has it finally quit raining??? We should actually start having beautiful Spring-time weather. So…..what’s new for Spring?

One of the biggest trends for Spring is clean and crisp STRIPES! Stripes are everywhere and on everything this season! Narrow stripes are more flattering on most people than a bold stripe which can be a trickier option. Treat a two tone contrast stripe like this jacket from Dillard’s as a neutral and wear with any other solid color, or a print if you’re adventurous!

Another trend for Spring is a black and white color combo. It’s found in clothes, accessories, and shoes like these pumps by Ivanka Trump available at Nordstrom.

Floral prints are springing up on jeans, jackets and tops….even headbands like this tropical style and lots of other super cute “Turband’s” s from cultgaia.com which look great mostly on younger ladies!

Metallic studs, lace and laser cut-outs are popular trends and can make your outfit look new! Gold studs on this Michael Kors small shoulder bag from Macy’s are a perfect accent and transform even a simple outfit.

Add a new top with laser cuts from Tibi to your Spring wardrobe for a modern twist. Wear it with jeans for a night out with the girls or with a skirt for the office. Layer on a jacket for those cool Spring mornings and nights!

Have FUN this SPRING and just try something a little bit different than you always wear. You might like it!

Consider skinny jeans…

SKINNY JEANS are EVERYWHERE!

The SKINNY denim look keeps going strong! There are so many denim brands to choose from in all price ranges so it’s hard to know where to start and what to look for! Are premium denim jeans worth the price? You CAN find skinny (or straight leg) jeans to fit your shape!

People Magazine Style Watch 2012 winner’s Levi’s Modern Rise Bold Curvy Skinny jeans might be just what your curves need and the dark wash is slimming too.

Also a Style Watch award winner in the “boyish” category is the Gap 1969 Always Skinny jeans.

To improve shape retention, premium brands are made with specialized fabric blends of cotton, polyester, Lycra, spandex, etc… the list goes on. Added extra’s … hidden pockets and forward side seams are common, as well as other special features like you’ll find in the Paige skinnies (my personal favorites) available at Bloomingdale’s.

The rear pockets are very subtly asymmetrical for a flattering look and the dark wash is without whiskering or shading to help you appear longer and leaner.

If you prefer a straight leg jean, the DL 1961 “Kate” style was another Style Watch 2012 award winner, considered universally flattering and can be found at Nordstom and Von Maur.

Plus sized Lucky Brand “Ginger” skinny jeans are available in a dark wash and other colors, and are sold at Macy’s.

Petite and Tall ladies will find many choices on the Lucky Brand website, and in Gap Stores.

You may decide skinny denim isn’t for you, but these are great options to try! Skinny or straight leg jeans are perfect with flats, heels, tucked into boots this winter or with sandals in the summer…..ahhhh, can’t wait for that!!!
