FALL 2016 Man Style

What should a man wear when he’s not in a suit? Business casual dress is the new normal for many offices and the options are often confusing. It can be tricky putting all of the pieces together when going for more style than the basic shirt and khaki pant combination.

Choose a pant with texture or pattern like these ‘Boss’ flat front houndstooth wool trousers from Nordstrom.mens-houndstoothAdd a shirt with a small plaid, stripe or check pattern. This non-iron “Madison Fit Hairline Framed Check” style is made by Brooks Brothers.brooks-brothers-shirtIf the formality of a tie is preferred, then a solid or pattern tie would work well with this shirt and pants. It’s personal preference whether a tie and pocket square are both worn together, or neither is necessary with a shirt, trousers and sweater. This Ted Baker London silk tie is available at Nordstrom and can be worn with a plaid shirt and sweater or with a sport coat.ted-baker-tieLayer a V-Neck or half zip sweater over a shirt and tie combination, and choose a contrast color for more interest like the Bloomingdale’s Men’s Store cashmere half zip sweater in “Granite Grey.” This sweater looks as great with jeans as it does with dress slacks.bloomingdales-mens-cashmere-sweater

Wear a sport coat or blazer over the sweater if you’d like extra interest, layers and a dressier look. This sport coat from Bloomingdales is the Hugo Boss “Antano Slim Fit” style. boss-sport-coat

Finish the whole look with a great pair of shoes. The “St. John’s” double monk strap style from Allen Edmond is available in three shades of leather.double-monk-strap-mens-shoe

There are so many options with these wardrobe pieces…. switching up the dress slacks for jeans, wearing a shirt, tie and pocket square, or the sweater with or without the sport coat…. the list goes on….. so dress for your professional needs, whatever your day requires and also builds your confidence.

Trend Alert – Capes and Ponchos!

Do you remember wearing a cape or poncho back in the day? Well if this is your first time around with the trend, you’ll enjoy it because capes and ponchos are a huge hit this Fall and Winter and can be found nearly everywhere you look!

C Wonder has a black and white herringbone belted cape which was featured in September’s Oprah Magazine.

C Wonder black and white capeFor a more laid back vibe, this casual poncho from Calypso St. Barth would be great for a drive to the mountains, spending the day exploring the West End, or strolling a Fall festival.

Calypso St Barth navy ponchoAnthropologie has a cozy unbelted cape that can be dressed up or down for a sophisticated business casual look or for fun on the weekends and is appropriate for women of any age. It pairs well with a skirt as in the photo below, pants, or your favorite jeans. The cape is available in petites too!

Anthropologie neutral capeFrench Connection has an adorable wool blend plaid version!

So, how do you wear this trend? If you’re wearing a poncho or cape, make sure the rest of your outfit is more fitted with a slim, straight, cropped or skinny leg pant or a skirt that stays close to your frame so you don’t look overwhelmed by your clothes, and no long skirts or baggy pants allowed! Keep your shirt plain, simple and smooth underneath so your cape or poncho is your style statement without extra bulk. A structured fabric works best for the office, while a knit is more appropriate for casual days. Capes and ponchos feel current, in style, and super chic so try them to break out of your “same old sweater” rut!

Emerald Green: THE color of 2013!

Find YOUR best Emerald Green for the Holidays!

The Pantone Color Institute makes a prediction each December of the most popular color for the following year. Last Thursday, December 6th, lush and lively emerald green was selected for 2013 which means you’ll be seeing it everywhere including clothing and accessories, home furnishing, paint…. even cars. So, is there a better time than now to show off some of those gorgeous greens during the holidays?

Many celebrities have been sighted wearing emerald green gowns including Pippa Middleton looking fabulous in her dress by Temperley London. If you’re not headed to a formal event like Pippa and green is not one of your colors, consider the hue in shoes or accessories.

If you’d like to wear a casual green, Anthropologie has a darling “winter waves” cardigan sweater that could be fun and

Dillard’s carries Steve Madden studded ballet flats which would be perfect for the annual neighborhood “hot chocolate and cookie” gathering.

Coach makes a new emerald Penny Leather Shoulder Purse with a tassel detail that would make a great gift for the holidays and would be enjoyed throughout the New Year. No need to stress about what size to buy…it fits everyone!

Another perfect gift idea in green is these stud earrings from Kate Spade…. classic, classy and less than $50.

Will you be fresh and lovely wearing green in 2013?!!    One thing’s for sure… you’ll be ready for St. Paddy’s Day!

Polished Peplum

PEPLUM is BACK!

The modern take on the peplum style is super flattering on most body types. This style has been around and back again, starting with the 40’s, then the 80’s and is a huge trend again for 2012. This extra flounce of fabric has been added to tops and jackets, skirts, dresses and high waisted pants…even hemlines.

Here’s Charlize Theron in a classic red Lanvin peplum dress for the MTV Movie Awards back in June,

and Emma Stone at the same event in a dramatic black peplum top. While Emma is wearing a fuller skirt, its generally best to have a fitted silhouette on the bottom by wearing slim pants or a pencil skirt.

If you’re looking for a top with that extra ruffle try this cozy cashmere sweater from Bloomingdale’s which could be casual or dressy.

Another great peplum top, this one for plus sized women made in a metallic fabric by Alfani for Macy’s.…is perfect for the holidays!

And, a fantastic skirt that’ll make you want to wear peplum is this Alice + Olivia pencil skirt from Neiman Marcus. Pair it with a fitted blouse for an office party or dinner date.

Curious to know more about Peplum? Here’s a tiny little history lesson…..http://fashionandhistory.wordpress.com/2012/01/07/the-frilly-tale-of-the-peplum/

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU!!!
